Given that Japanese culture has developed and matured through exchanges with East Asia and other countries, I believe that studying Japanese culture by comparing it to your own culture will make for an intellectually fascinating experience.

  • Profile
  • Dr. Koh Kawata obtained his Ph.D. in Literature from Kyoto University in 2005. He obtained his BA from Kyoto University in 1992 and MA from the same institution in 1994. He also studied socio-psychological theories at the University of Melbourne in 1999. He taught Sociology at Kyoto Gakuen University (currently Kyoto University of Advanced Science) from 1997 to 2019 and became a professor at Kyoto University of Advanced Science in 2019.

Dr. Kawata’s research interest lies in the history of affection of the general population in East Asia (especially in China and Japan). He attempts to discover these unknown histories through sociological and psychological analysis of popular stories, such as the Legend of Tanabata (七夕), the Legends of the White Snake(白蛇伝), Mulian Rescues His Mother (目連救母), Chikamatsu’s Joruri stories (近松の浄瑠璃), Hong Kong films and many others.

His favorite things to do are to watch films and dramas of East Asia while chilling out on his couch and cooking and indulging in Chinese foods, so much that his wife tends to be worried about his health.
