  • Yasue Bo was born to a tea farmer in Kyoto, one of the major production areas of Japanese tea, and grew up feeling the gradual decline of Japanese farming, mountain and fishing villages. She had a desire to suppress their decline and applied to study agriculture during her university years. While studying agriculture and livestock production, she became interested in farming, mountain and fishing villages, sites of agricultural production, and pursued a career in agricultural management. Different agricultural forms, landscapes, climates, cultures, and people in different regions become unique and attractive to local communities. In other words, no rural area is the same. And instead of just watching the area decline, local residents have joined forces to carry out activities and initiatives that not only maintain but also improve the vitality of the region. Though it is small-scale initiative implemented by rural communities, it has the potential spread across the country. Dr. Bo and her colleagues are looking for the appeal of such activities and initiatives in rural communities.

  • Rural areas have numerous functions outside of food production, such as environmental preservation of national land, preservation of biodiversity, formation of good landscapes, and cultural transmission. The effects of these functions are enjoyed not only by local residents living in rural areas but also by the general population as a whole. However, due to the population decline and aging of rural areas in Japan, it has become difficult to maintain community functions and local resources, and the number of areas whose existence is in danger is increasing. On the other hand, some areas are trying to revitalize rural areas by implementing activities and initiatives utilizing local resources.
With that in mind, Dr. Bo and her colleagues are studying the activities in rural areas, especially the promotion process of agricultural lodging and sustainable development factors that have been developed in the entire area.
