Kameoka, a beautiful city in Kyoto Prefecture, recently witnessed an inspiring event showcasing the spirit of global education that Kyoto University of Advanced Science (KUAS) passionately promotes. On Thursday, January 30, 2025, ten international students from KUAS visited Kameoka-Kawahigashi Gakuen, a local school, for a special cultural exchange. This heartwarming event perfectly embodies KUAS’s dedication to fostering international understanding and creating impactful learning experiences both within and beyond our campus.
Kyoto University of Advanced Science (KUAS) is committed to providing a globally-focused education, and this visit exemplified that commitment in action. Our students, representing diverse countries like Egypt, Uzbekistan, and Myanmar, journeyed to Kameoka-Kawahigashi Gakuen to connect with eager third and eighth-grade students. This enriching session, integrated into an English class, served as a bridge between cultures and a testament to the power of cross-cultural communication.
Building Bridges to Global Understanding, Starting in Kyoto:

The exchange began with friendly greetings in English, setting a welcoming atmosphere. During self-introductions, the KUAS international students shared their diverse backgrounds, sparking genuine curiosity amongst the Japanese children. The realization that these visitors came from so far away instantly broadened the students’ horizons and highlighted the global community that KUAS is a part of.
Dividing into smaller groups, students engaged in lively English conversations. Simple icebreaker questions facilitated active language practice and helped forge connections. This direct interaction underscored the importance of practical language skills and the value of intercultural dialogue, key elements of a KUAS education.
Sharing Japanese Culture with a Global Perspective:

The students of Kameoka-Kawahigashi Gakuen then proudly presented aspects of Japanese culture to the KUAS students. Eighth graders took on the role of cultural ambassadors, explaining traditional Japanese games in English, including:
- Daruma-san ga koronda: Red light green light.
- Karuta: The classic Japanese card game.
- Origami: The elegant art of paper folding, showcasing Japanese artistry and patience.
- And more !
The KUAS students enthusiastically participated, experiencing these games firsthand and creating shared moments of joy and learning. This hands-on cultural immersion provided a valuable experience for both the KUAS and local students, fostering a deeper appreciation for each other’s cultures.
Campus Exploration and Lasting Connections Beyond the Classroom:

The cultural exchange extended beyond the classroom with Kameoka-Kawahigashi Gakuen students continuing conversations with the KUAS students and gifting them handmade origami as tokens of friendship. A campus tour followed, allowing the international visitors to experience a Japanese school environment and further connect with the local students.
This visit reflects KUAS’s commitment to community engagement and providing our international students with opportunities to experience Japanese culture firsthand.
Testimonials Speak Volumes: The Impact of KUAS Global Engagement:

The KUAS international students shared incredibly positive feedback, emphasizing the profound impact of this experience:
- “It was such a pleasant experience. I was honestly amazed by how much effort they had put into that day.”
- “I enjoyed interacting with them, talking about hobbies, food, anime and more.”
- “I would be delighted to visit again next time!”
This cultural exchange directly benefits both Kameoka-Kawahigashi Gakuen students, enhancing their English skills and global awareness, and KUAS students, enriching their experience in Japan and fostering intercultural competence. These are precisely the types of enriching experiences Kyoto University of Advanced Science strives to provide.
This event at Kameoka-Kawahigashi Gakuen beautifully illustrates Kyoto University of Advanced Science’s dedication to international exchange, building global connections, and inspiring future global citizens. It’s a powerful example of how KUAS students are actively engaged in the local community and gaining invaluable experiences beyond the classroom.
