４月3日、京都市勧業館「みやこめっせ」で2025年度入学式を挙行しました。
式当日の前田学長の告辞を全文掲載します。
新入生の皆さん、ご入学おめでとうございます。京都先端科学大学の教職員を代表して、心より歓迎いたします。また、今日まで、皆さんを支えてこられたご家族や関係者の皆さまにも、心からお祝い申し上げます。
本日から、皆さんは京都先端科学大学の一員となります。これからの大学生活は、新しい学びや出会いに満ちたものになるでしょう。皆さんは、どんな目標を持ち、この大学に入学されたでしょうか？ まだ具体的な目標がない人もいるかもしれません。皆さんの状況がどうであれ、一つだけ確かなことがあります。それは、大学での学びは皆さん次第で無限に広がるということです。どこまで広がるかわからない、だから無限、です。
知識を超え、考え抜く力を身につける
大学での学びは、高校までの学びとは大きく異なります。単に知識を得るだけでなく、その知識をどう活かすのか、自ら問いを立て、とことん考え抜く力が求められます。本当に重要なのは、「学んだ知識をどう使い、どのように新しい価値を生み出せるか」 を考えることです。
たとえば、本学の工学部では、すでに授業のほとんどが英語で行われています。世界中から学生が集まり、国際学生の割合は半数を超えています。今年の9月には、経済経営学部、バイオ環境学部にも英語のみでも卒業できる国際コースが設置されます。すでに入試も始まっており、多くの留学生が世界から本学に参加します。この環境で学ぶことは、単なる語学の習得を超え、異なる文化や価値観を持つ仲間とともに考え、協力し、時にはぶつかりながらも、新しいアイデアを生み出す経験となるでしょう。
また、本学では「実践的な学び」を重視しています。企業や自治体と連携したプロジェクト、最先端の研究活動、起業を目指すプログラムなど、皆さんが主体的に学ぶ機会が数多く用意されています。受け身で学ぶのではなく、自らの意思で行動することが、これからの大学生活で何よりも大切です。
困難を乗り越え、成長する
皆さんの先輩たちも、多くの困難を乗り越えてきました。コロナ禍です。皆さんも高校生活で大きな影響を受けたことでしょう。自由に人と会うこともできず、対面授業や活動が制限される中、試行錯誤を重ねながら学び続けました。そして、今年卒業した先輩たちは、厳しい環境の中で自ら考え、努力を重ね、社会へと飛び立っていきました。
さらに、世界を見渡せば、戦争や経済危機、気候変動といった課題が山積しています。ウクライナ危機、ガザ地区の紛争、アメリカの新大統領の影響……これらは遠い国の話ではなく、私たちの暮らしにも大きな影響を及ぼします。本学では、ウクライナからの学生も学んでいます。また、先日の地震で被害を受けたミャンマーからも多くの学生が来ています。彼らは故郷を離れ、言葉や文化の壁を乗り越えながら、ここで学び続けています。彼らと接する中で、世界の現実を肌で感じることも、皆さんの大切な学びとなるでしょう。
こうした時代だからこそ、皆さんには 「世界をより良くするために、自分に何ができるのか」 を常に考えてほしいのです。大学は、ただ知識を得る場所ではなく、社会に貢献できる力を養う場所でもあります。
大学は、自分の可能性を発見する場
大学生活は、自分の可能性を発見し、試し、挑戦する場 です。これから4年間の間に、たくさんの新しいことに出会うでしょう。学問や研究、クラブ活動、ボランティア、国内外のインターンシップ——どの経験も、皆さんを成長させる貴重な機会です。
もちろん、すべてが思い通りに進むわけではありません。時には挫折し、思い通りにならないこともあるでしょう。しかし、それを恐れず、一歩踏み出してください。失敗は決して無駄ではありません。むしろ、その経験こそが、皆さんの成長につながるのです。
また、もし困ったことがあれば、遠慮なく私たち教職員に相談してください。皆さんが安心して学び続けられるよう、全力でサポートします。
未来を創るのは、皆さんです。
4年後、皆さんは「京都先端科学大学の卒業生」として、社会へと羽ばたいていきます。そのとき、今日の自分と比べて、大きく成長したと実感できるような大学生活を送ってください。皆さんがFuture Makersになるのです。

Dear new students, congratulations on your admission to Kyoto University of Advanced Science. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I extend a heartfelt welcome to each of you. I also want to express my sincere congratulations to your families and those who have supported you on this journey.
As of today, you are officially members of Kyoto University of Advanced Science. Your university life will be filled with new learning experiences and encounters. What goals did you have in mind when you chose to enter this university? Some of you may have a clear vision of your future, while others may still be unsure. No matter where you stand, one thing is certain—the opportunities to learn at university are limitless. How far you go is up to you.
Beyond Knowledge: Learning to Think Deeply
Studying at a university is vastly different from what you experienced in high school. It is not just about acquiring knowledge but about learning how to apply it, asking the right questions, and thinking critically. What truly matters is not simply what you learn, but how you use that knowledge to create new value in the world.
For example, in the KUAS Faculty of Engineering, most courses are already taught in English, and international students make up more than half of the student body. This September, the Faculties of Economics & Business Administration and Bioenvironmental Sciences will also launch international programs that can be completed entirely in English. Admissions for these programs have already begun, and students from all over the world are preparing to join our university. Studying in such an environment is about more than just language—it is about learning how to work with people from different cultures, exchanging ideas, and sometimes clashing, only to come together again to create something new.
At KUAS, we place a strong emphasis on practical learning. Through projects with companies and local governments, cutting-edge research opportunities, and programs designed for aspiring entrepreneurs, you will find countless opportunities to take initiative in your own education. Passive learning will not take you far—actively making decisions and taking initiative will be key to your university experience.
Overcoming Challenges and Growing Stronger
Your upperclassmen faced great difficulties during their time here. Due to the pandemic, many were unable to meet freely with friends, and in-person classes and activities were severely limited. Despite this, they continued to push forward, learning through trial and error. The students who graduated this year navigated those challenges, thought for themselves, and put in the effort to overcome obstacles. Now, they are stepping into society, ready to take on new challenges.
On a global scale, we are surrounded by issues such as war, economic instability, and climate change. The crisis in Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza, the uncertainties surrounding the new U.S. presidential administration—these are not distant problems. They have direct consequences on our lives. At KUAS, we have opened our doors to Ukrainian students who left their homeland to continue their studies here, overcoming language and cultural barriers. Getting to know them and understanding their experiences will be an important part of your education, helping you connect with the realities of our world on a personal level.
This is why I ask you to always think about what you can do to make the world a better place. A university is not just a place to gain knowledge—it is a place to develop the skills and mindset needed to contribute to society.
A Place to Discover Your Potential
University is a time to explore your potential, test yourself, and take on new challenges. Over the next four years, you will encounter countless new experiences—academic studies, research, club activities, volunteer work, and domestic or international internships. Each one of these experiences will help you grow in ways you cannot yet imagine.
Of course, not everything will go as planned. There will be times when you struggle, when things do not go your way. But do not be afraid to take that first step forward. Failure is not a waste—it is a stepping stone to growth. The challenges you face and overcome will become your greatest strengths.
And if you ever find yourself struggling, do not hesitate to reach out to us. The faculty and staff are here to support you, ensuring that you can learn and grow in a safe and welcoming environment.
You Are the Future Makers
Four years from now, you will graduate as proud alumni of Kyoto University of Advanced Science. When that day comes, I hope you will look back and see just how much you have grown. The experiences you create here will shape the person you become. You all are the future makers.
